“Babe, let’s make this our spot! We’ll come back every few years and when we have kids, we’ll bring them here!.” We had such a lovely time at Nikoi that we can’t wait to go back!
Nikoi is a private island, about 85km from Singapore. It is owned by an Australian couple who turned it into a private island resort in 2007. There are only 20 beach houses on the island and they usually get booked out 6 months in advanced.
I came across Nikoi while researching for our honeymoon and it looked like paradise, perfect for a honeymoon! We had already decided on a backpacking honeymoon and secretly, I wished I found out about Nikoi before our decision. Luckily, because we were travelling to India for a wedding, I came up with the idea of doing a mini moon instead and Ryan said ok!
Nikoi Island is an easy getaway from Singapore, which was our base as we were also flying to Cambodia and India after our mini moon.
A quick hawker meal breakfast of Lor Mee and Prawn Noodles close to our hotel and we were off to the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. From the ferry terminal, it was an hour ferry ride to Bintan. We had to clear immigration at Bintan but if you’re a Nikoi guest, you get to go through the express lane so that was a boon! From there, we were taken in a car to Kawal, the jetty to get to Nikoi and 45 minutes later, we’re on paradise.
It didn’t matter that there was a torrential downpour about 30 mins into our arrival. It was the perfect island retreat (or in our case, our mini-moon retreat).
Things to Do
The best bits for us is waking up to the sounds of waves in the morning and seeing the sun rise on one side of the island and then setting on the other side of the island. I love this!!! I’ve been waking up really early each morning just to watch the sun rise, to see the tide go out and see the place comes to life. You don’t get this even at resorts (you’re usually encassed in a closed up air conditioned room with tonnes of tourists around!).
The two of us are in love with this place. You get the whole island to yourselves. Like literally. You can explore the day away and not really see anyone else except at meal times. That’s when you realised you’re not the only people on the island. So most of the time, it feels like the entire island is your playground. There are no forbidden areas, no other hotels, and no touts. Pretty amazing, really!
The service here is unbelievable and the food, amazing. We met the chef on our last night there and found out that he used to work with Banyan Tree so no wonder! Ryan keeps saying he haven’t found any faults with the island yet and I have to agree with him.
You can literally walk off the beach and be seeing amazing fishes and corals and everything else under the sea. It was absolutely amazing! We went snorkeling and luckily, I bought 2 underwater cameras for this trip. I can’t wait to see the photos when we get them back from the lab!
We’re already talking about saving up to come back here again in a few years time!!
